WHY AND HOW
Desertstar Project for the Mentally Disabled was started by a group of parents, siblings, mentally ill persons, and friends, who desired a high quality of life for mentally ill people in our community. Founding members believed that because of limited funds and services in the Coachella Valley, people with mental illness were not able to fully develop living, working, educational, social and recreational skills to live happy and productive lives. After researching, our organization realized we would need to form a nonprofit corporation and borrow the best and most successful attributes of established nonprofits offering services and housing to mentally ill adults throughout the country. Safe, attractive and comfortable housing was a number one priority on everyone's list, followed by help with daily living skills, work training, education, and social/ recreational programs.
