Goal is to build A village for those with disorders.
A NAMI family passionate about the mentally ill has established a nonprofit group in the hope of building a housing development promoting self-sufficiency and community.

Louise and John Hancock established Desertstar Project for the Mentally Disabled, made up of parents, siblings and friends of the mentally ill who desire a high quality of life for the mentally disabled. The group seeks to build Desertstar Village, an approximately $9 million housing development for 140 - 163 residents with mental disorders.

"Our goal is to provide housing, rentals and permanent homes for people who can actually be self-sufficient and take care of themselves," Louise Hancock said. "So many people live in isolation."

"When the parent dies our people will have a place forever," said Louise Hancock.
The fear of not having a place to live can loom as large as the fear of their parents dying, she said.
